    Dukot

        (Disappearance)

Damayan Manitoba, in partnership with BAYAN Canada, Aksyon ng Ating Kabataan (ANAK) and Global College at the University of Winnipeg will host the award-winning Philippine film, Dukot (Disappearance) during the Winnipeg stop of its cross Canada tour. The Winnipeg screening will take place at the University of Winnipeg Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, 515 Portage Avenue on Friday, May 14 (6:30pm) andSaturday, May 15 (1pm and 5pm). A public forum will follow with a discussion led by Editha Burgos, mother of abducted activist Jonas Burgos.

This Canada tour aims to bring awareness of the political killings currently taking place in the Philippines. Since 2001, over 200 cases of enforced disappearances and more than 1,000 cases of extrajudicial killings have been documented. Last November 2009, the Philippines made headlines worldwide for the massacre of 57 people, including 30 journalists, prior to the Maguindanao provincial election. We wish to ensure atrocities like these no longer continue. All funds raised from this screening will support human rights organizations Karapatan and Desaparecidos in the Philippines as well as educational and advocacy programs in Manitoba.

This fundraiser is an important event for all the participating cities and organizations. We look forward to your support and encourage you attend this event. Tickets are $15 and are available at Discovery Bakery (506 Notre Dame Avenue), University of Winnipeg Info Booth or from Damayan Manitoba and ANAK members.
