ANAK partners in first national study on Filipino-Canadian youth

Past research says that across Canada, Filipino-Canadian youth struggle to finish high school or university. It also suggests that they will struggle with under-employment as they enter the workforce.

Is this true in Winnipeg?

We want to find out. The Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada study is taking place in 4 cities (Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Hamilton). Each city has its own unique Filipino- Canadian story. So, we need you to tell us about you in this first-ever national study on Filipino-Canadian youth.

Fill out the survey at
www.fytic.edudata.ca

if you:

  • are Filipino-Canadian (with at least one parent born in the Philippines)
  • over 18 years of age (there is no maximum age)
  • were born in Canada or immigrated before the age of 13.

“Filipino immigrants arrive in Canada with one of the highest percentages of university-level education among all recent immigrant groups, and yet the children of Filipino immigrants have one of the lowest rates of university graduation across the country”, says Dr. Philip Kelly.

The York University professor is now working with the Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg to examine these recent statistics. He is the principal investigator of the Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada project, the first ever national study to examine the experiences of Filipino-Canadian youth.?

“It would seem that a pattern is emerging of Filipino-Canadian youth reproducing the subordinate labour market positions into which their parents were incorporated upon arrival. The objective of this project is to examine the roots of these inter-generational outcomes,” says Kelly.?

The study is taking place in four cities across Canada; Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton and Vancouver.

Take part in the survey

The project is currently calling on Filipino-Canadians to take part in its national survey at www.fytic.edudata.ca.

“It would be interesting to learn what Winnipeggers will have to say about these statistics,” says Winnipeg research collaborator, Darlyne Bautista. “Winnipeg is a unique city and our Filipino-Canadian community has grown and progressed here in so many different ways. I think it’s important to know where the differences and similarities lie across Canada. It will definitely say a lot about how immigrants and their families are welcomed and treated here. We need to represent Winnipeg.”

The information gathered from the study will help understand the issues faced by the community, and will suggest how governments might be able to do more to help.
