Last November 5th 2009, building upon the success of the Kapatid Mentorship Program at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute, ANAK launched another “Mentorship Program” for the “bagong dating” (newcomers) to help reach their potential by guiding and encouraging them to excel and grow. The mentors (aka. “ates” and “kuyas”) inspire, counsel, and encourage the mentees (aka “kapatids”) in developing their vision for the future and skills needed to advance on a career path. University students, including myself devote some time as a volunteer to help the kapatids if they are having a hard time with their school subjects. Kapatids get live one-to-one assistance from their Ates and Kuyas that helps them to excel in Math, Biology, and Grammar etc. Although this after-school program only take place for one hour each week, it has really helped a lot of students do well and adapt to the new teaching strategies here in Canada. I would know, I used to be a kapatid mentee when I was in high school a few years ago. This program boosted my confidence and I think it helped make me a better person. I learned a lot of things and the best part was gaining tons and tons of friends. The exciting part of being in this mentorship program is not only for academic assistance but also for after-school activities/games such as playing scrabble, playing charade, jeopardy questions about history of Canada and other brain workouts that will aid the students to grow their vocabulary and knowledge about Canada. Moreover, ANAK organizes educational fieldtrips (Manitoba Museum, festival du voyageur etc.) to familiarize students with their new home/environment. So what are you guys waiting for? Volunteer or join and be one of the kapatids because if we think about ANAK Mentorship it means - learning new skills - meeting new friends- and having Fun! The ANAK Kapatid Mentorship program is now taking place at Daniel McIntyre and Sisler High Schools. Visit www.anak.ca for more information.
