Migration and development in the Philippines:

ANAK Liwayway scholarship offers full tuition

We are pleased to announce that for the fourth consecutive year, ANAK will be offering its Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence. As we strive to promote and preserve Filipino heritage and culture in Winnipeg, we want to ensure that young students are reminded of the value of knowing who we are and where we come from. This year’s scholarship will offer full paid tuition to both graduating high school and current university students to attend ANAK’s second Philippine Studies Summer Institute at the Global College at the University of Winnipeg (August 3 to 13, 2010).

The course, Migration and Development in the Philippines (HRGS-1000/3), will be offered for 3 university credits at both the first and second year levels. In order to explore the questions that continue to plague us as a nation (How “poor” is the Philippines really? Why do Filipinos have to leave the country to find work? Why are there a growing number of Filipinos arriving in Canada? How did we get to where we are?), we are honoured to welcome world renowned scholar, Antonio Tujan Jr. of the IBON Research Foundation in Manila, Philippines.

An international researcher, editor, educator, and writer, Mr. Tujan is also the Chairman of the Asia Pacific Research Network and Reality of Aid organizations. He has lead several global efforts towards the eradication of poverty in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. It is an honour and indeed a privilege to welcome him and broaden the discussion of change among students here in Winnipeg.
