Huge trucks with the familiar blood drop logo of Canadian Blood Services (CBS) lined up at Maples Collegiate on Jefferson Avenue on June 24 to unload nine beds and all the equipment needed to set up a blood donor clinic. Volunteers from the Manitoba Council of Canadian- Filipino Associations (MACFA), Carrie de la Cruz, Letty and Florencio Antonio, Norman Padilla, and Rowena Oquendo, greeted the donors with their warm smiles as they entered the big gym and helped distribute the ensaymadas, lumpiang shanghai and drinks.
“It’s great to see many of our kababayans come out to give blood. The needle is no longer intimidating and it is more fun as there is strength in numbers,” said Amalia Pempengco, who has been a CBS volunteer since 2003. “Many families from Bethel Baptist Church also came as this is our way of showing that we love Winnipeg.”
Donors of all ages from different nationalities and various walks of life came to give one hour of their time and their blood. That night 50 units of blood were collected, which means 150 people’s lives will be saved!
