WINNIPEG – Approximately 200 local Filipinos and other members of the community filled the Maples Community Centre on May 14 to attend a four-hour event dubbed the Foreign-trained Professional & Skilled Workers Accreditation Info Session. A panel of professionals from various fields shared advice and information with the audience of new Canadians who are seeking to have their foreign training recognized in Canada.
Among the guest speakers and panel members were: Hon. Flor Marcelino, Minister of Culture, Heritage & Tourism; Hon. Jennifer Howard, Minister of Labour & Immigration; Ximena Muñoz, Fairness Commissioner of Manitoba; Grant Koropatnick, Executive Director, Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Manitoba; Dr. Xin-Min Li, Director, International Medical Graduate Program, University of Manitoba (UM); Gemma Dalayoan, President, Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers; Regio Labao, President, Philippine Nurses Association of Manitoba; Agnieszka Gigiel, Bridge to Professional Accounting Program (UM); Dr. Marcia Friesen, Director, Internationally Educated Engineers Qualification Program (UM); Dennis Toledo, Director, Filipino-Canadian Technical Professionals Association of Manitoba and; Monika Feist, CEO Success Skills.
The information session was a joint project of Migrante Manitoba, Damayan Manitoba, the University of the Philippines Alumni & Associates in Manitoba and the Manitoba Council of Canadian-Filipino Associations.
