New regulations for worker recruitment in Manitoba

WINNIPEG – Employment Solutions for Immigrant Youth (ESIY) at 249 Notre Dame Avenue played host to Manitoba Labour and Immigration minister, Nancy Allan on April 1 to announce the implementation of the Worker Recruitment and Protection Act (WRPA).

The aim of the new act is to assist employers in recruiting immigrant workers already in Manitoba before looking abroad, as well as to ensure the effective and ethical recruitment of temporary foreign workers who can then apply to the Provincial Nominee Program for permanent immigration.

Aside from protecting foreign workers from unscrupulous immigration consultants, the new legislation helps our organization because it will allow employers to look for eligible candidates here and use foreign recruitment as a last resort for hiring workers,” said Norman Umali, a coordinator for ESIY.

Minister Allan met with ESIY staff after the announcement and listened to some of the success stories from their clients.
