WINNIPEG – Members of the Filipino Canadian Technical Professionals Association of Manitoba (FCTPAM) and the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations (MaCCFA) came together to organize a fund raising drive for victims of the magnitude-seven earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti on January 12. The groups collected donations from the public at the Philippine Canadian Cultural Centre (PCCM) and in the Polo Park Shopping Mall from January 21 to 31.

“One of our missions is to help other people and this is our first time to do fundraising for another country; we hope that other ethnic groups would do the same,” said Alex Majul, president of FCTPAM.

“We felt that the Haitians have almost the same needs we had provided to our kababayans last year during the Ondoy fundraising… We are only a part of the universal response to what is happening now in Haiti,” said Rowena Oquendo, president of MaCCFA, during a meeting of the two organizations.

According to FCTPAM auditor, Opel Miguel, the campaign at the Polo Park Mall and the PCCM, raised in excess of $12,000 and further donations will be solicited from local businesses up until February 6 when the money will be turned over to the Canadian Red Cross.
