“We are pleased to announce some of the 2010 Olympic Torchbearers and to recognize that their commitment will help build a lasting legacy for Winnipeg and for Canada… to be a part of the Olympic Torch Relay is a unique and exciting opportunity and RBC is proud to offer Canadians a chance to participate in the Olympic celebrations and share in the Olympic spirit,” said Rob Johnston, Regional President for RBC. Among the local people recognized as torchbearers during the event were Gail Asper, Grand Chief Ron Evans, Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, and Phil Fontaine. The Olympic Flame will begin its journey to Vancouver on October 30 when the flame arrives in Victoria following a traditional lighting ceremony in Greece. It will arrive in Winnipeg on January 5, 2010. Approximately 12,000 Canadians will carry the flame across the country on a route spanning 4,500 km and over 1000 communities over the course of 106 days. It will end at B.C. Place on February 12, 2010 with the lighting of the Olympic Couldron, signalling the start of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
