What do you get when you mix a birthday cake, Michael Jackson and a disaster in the Philippines? – a very special fund raising event, of course. News of recent flooding and devastation in the Philippines moved 10-year-old Stefan Urbano to turn his birthday party into a fundraiser for disaster relief. Inspired by the lyric of Michael Jacskon’s song, The Man in the Mirror, Stefan asked birthday guests in his Grade 5 class at St. Ignatius Catholic School to consider making a donation to the Fil-Can Disaster Relief Fund instead of bringing presents. “My parents [Jun and Regina Urbano] came from the Philippines and I wanted to help their homeland, ” said Stefan. Stefan and his guests raised $325 at his party on Thursday, October 8, which he presented to the Fil-Can Disaster Relief Fund Committee on the following Saturday at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba.
