WINNIPEG – The Waverly Mitsubishi auto dealership delivered the first all-electric Mitsubishi vehicle in Canada to Winnipeg customer Ross Redman on Thursday, December 22. Redman placed a $5,000 deposit in 2008 to be the first kid on the block to have a Mitsubishi i-MiEv (pronounced “eye-meev).
“I’ve wanted to own an electric car since the 1960’s,” said Redman, “I put the deposit down hoping I would be able to make a fully electric car my daily commuter vehicle. I can’t wait to drive it off the lot.”
The Mitsubishi i-MiEv, which follows the Nissan Leaf’s recent introduction to Manitoba, is a four-passenger, sub-compact hatchback that has no tailpipe and emits no greenhouse gases. The rear-motor, rear-wheel drive can take the car up to a maximum speed of 130 km/h. It can travel up to 155 kilometres on a single charge, however, extreme cold could reduce its range to approximately one third of that figure.
According to information supplied by Rino Attardo, general manager of Waverly Mitsubishi, the cost of powering the i-MiEV is far less than a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle – approximately one to two cents per kilometre, depending on electricity rates. To completely charge the i-MiEV will cost approximately one to two dollars.
With its base model price of $32,998 and its fully loaded package going for $36,298, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV is considered to be the most affordable mass-produced all-electric vehicle in the Canadian marketplace.
