Winnipeg Flight Basketball 2009

On the weekend of May 15-17, 2009, Team Winnipeg Flight soared passed the competition in the Western Fil-Can Basketball tournament held in Calgary. Eight teams comprised the tournament: Winnipeg Flight, Winnipeg U-Mac, three teams from Vancouver, Red Deer and Edmonton, and the two-time defending champions, Calgary Selects.

Calgary Selects were confident as they prepared to win a “three-peat” but when former Winnipeg basketballer Chris Joaquin, now living in Calgary, greeted his friends from Winnipeg Flight, he knew his Calgary team was in for a tough challenge. After entering the opposing team’s hotel room, he commented on how “stacked” the Winnipeg team was. Sure enough, Winnipeg Flight breeezed through the tournament with a 5-0 record as they handily beat Vancouver in the finals. Prince Cayetano took home MVP honours while Josh Olaes was an all-star.

After weeks of practice and meeting their championship goals, I had the opportunity to celebrate with the team and collect some of their inside jokes from the weekend. Well, they know what they mean.

Winnipeg Filght Basketball 2005Rob Adelantar: “Ultimate dream team!”
Jay Olaes: “Minute maid or just set it and forget it.”
Mario Olaes: “Give me the ball.” or “Commander-in-chief.”

Josh Olaes- “Give it to Boyong.”
Melvin Locquiao: “Best wingman” or “What a moobs.”
Aldrich Locquiao: “Happy birthday cake to me!”
Don Capina: “Face!”

Jaysel DeLapas: “Can I get your SP?”
Prince Cayetano: “P90X” or “MV-PRINCE”
Chris Ramos: “That’s my meatball!”
