Julian Bañares
Football is his game

BanaresAt 5’8” and weighing 145 lbs – an athlete of such built would normally not be considered a big threat on the football field. Football as we know is a physical sport and therefore the ultimate warriors on the field should, in our minds, be big gladiators.

Let me introduce to you Julian Bañares who dispels this myth. His actions speak louder than his size – and football is his game.

Julian, 15, is an honour student in the French Immersion program at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate. He has now become the 2008 Winnipeg High School Football Rookie of the year (Robert W. Whitlaw Memorial Award-Vidruk Division) after helping his team achieve an undefeated championship year as a starting receiver and back up quarterback.

To be a nominee, and to be the actual recipient of this prestigious award from the Winnipeg High School Football League is an absolute honour.

Julian began playing football at the early age of seven for the RODS Football Club. He started out as quarterback and quickly displayed great flair and talent early on; and discovered that his size was not a factor. At that young age, Julian had already developed the ability to throw with accuracy. When he needed to run, this young athlete would score a touchdown on most of his attempts.

Continuously gaining experience in this sport, Julian already has many accomplishments: 2005 RODS Offensive player of the year (wide receiver), 2006 RODS Offensive player of the year, 2007 RODS pride and leadership Award (Offense), 2007 Provincial Champions (flag football)… just to name a few.

We asked Julian what he would like to achieve in the future.

First of all, I would like to thank my family for all the support they’ve given me throughout my life. Secondly, I’d like to thank coach Brett Watt, coach Jeff Morgan and the coaching staff of Sturgeon Heights, for improving my skills as a player and person. In the future, I’d like to continue my career as a professional football player. Remember the name,” said young Julian.

Not only is Julian a great football player, he also plays volleyball and holds a 1st Degree Kukkiwon Certificate in Tae Kwon Do. He is an accomplished drummer and he still maintains a high average in his studies in spite of his busy schedule.

It will be very interesting and exciting to watch Julian as he matures into the game. Surely, his self-confidence, strong athleticism and intelligence spell success and we’ll continue to cheer him on for more accomplishments and awards in his sport.
