    Numero Uno!

       Winnipeg’s own March Madness produces champions

For the past month, the Filipino community has enjoyed a home-grown version of March Madness basketball. Four leagues – IKAW, Lipeños, PSBL and WAAY – simultaneously wowed their audiences as athletes in their respective divisions vied for the championships. Commissioners Jerry Medina (IKAW), Manny Aranez (Lipeños), and Delfin Voluntad (PSBL) and Angel Martinez (WAAY) wish to thank all their committee members, athletes, friends and family for their hard work, sportsmanship and commitment to their respective leagues.

The following pictures are those of the champions in each division of the leagues that submitted photos. Thanks to Robbie Cruz of the PSBL for assistance with photos.

  Lipeños League Juvenile Division - Hightops defeated West Alexander Technologies, 73-66, to win the best-of-three series Ladies Division - W5 defeated Versatile, 56-52, in a nail biter to win the best-of-three series
 
  Seniors Division - Ballerz defeated Scerbo, 74-57, in the second game to win the best-of-three series Men’s Open Division -  So Smooth defeated Hightops, 92-74, in two straight games. MVP Eric Garcia scored 28 points
 
  IKAW League 39 & Above - Guimbanians beat the defending Champions Loralee, 68-55, as Obet Amado. and Ronald Coching poured in 17 points each 48 and above - Loralee #1 defeated Tri-M, 68-55. Rene Doneza scored 14 points
 
  PSBL League Master Division - Domingo’s Auto Service defeated team Mekeni, 54- 41, with MVP Obet Terante scoring 25 points Senior Division - Super Aces/Guimbanians beat Perfect Smile, 68-57, for the three-peat. Coach of the Year: Louie Esconde
   
  Open Division - Fly Rice defeated Speedy/Mac-Don, 68-63, in a close match as Chris Sinclair poured in 17 points to help his team.
