Game, set and match!        New Sargent Park Tennis Centre is a winner

In the famous words of hip hop artist Eminem, “Opportunity comes once in a lifetime… go!” When the beautifully paved hard courts behind the Cindy Klassen facility became available, the Sargent Park Tennis Club led by Danny Magarro, took their opportunity to manage the Sargent Park Tennis Centre.

Danny Magarro and his fellow committee members have a vision for the youth in Winnipeg. On June 12, 2010, the club held its grand opening where many kids and their families were welcomed to the courts and the sport. “Our goal is to create an awareness and excitement for the sport of tennis among our young people in this province,” said Magarro.

Tennis Manitoba’s Robert Kennedy – a well-established and respected teacher of the sport – was around to teach basic lessons on ball control, serving, and receiving.

“The kids need to feel success in the sport early and so the concept for kids should be progressive tennis – where the court and size of the racquet is reduced,” he said. The ball the kids were using to hit was also technically designed to, “Rise up into the children’s target zone more frequently … this would increase the success of ball control,” added Kennedy.

The organizers of Sargent Park Tennis Club are excited to see this project grow, hoping to build their own clubhouse in the future. Everyone is invited to join as a member, a spectator or even just to discover and play the game of tennis.
