Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

WINNIPEG – Kevin Lamoureux, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North recently presented the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to six Winnipeggers in recognition of their contributions to Canada.

This was the second jubilee medal for Emmie Joaquin, editor-in-chief of the Pilipino Express, who was also awarded the Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. Joaquin was cited for her “many years in sharing the Filipino Culture with our community, serving as a true advocate towards cultural diversity in Manitoba.”

Winnipeg lawyer and Pilipino Express columnist, Alona Mercado, also received a medal for her service in several community organizations. “Her continued passion and commitment to service and volunteerism make her a valuable member of the Filipino community and the community at large.”

Luchie Sanchez, a long-time volunteer and church trustee at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church was recognized as a valued member of the parish community.

Christine Armstrong was recognized for her volunteer work with St. John's Ambulance.

Husband and wife, Adam and Dawn Tocci were awarded jointly for providing youth, seniors and all members of the Maples community a place to participate in leisure programing and recreational activities.

Former Honorary Philippine Consul in Manitoba, Dr. Roland Guzman, received a Diamond Jubilee Medal during the Knight’s of Rizal Youth Recognition Awards night on December 30, 2012. He was cited as a Filipino pioneer in Manitoba who made a tangible impact on many Filipino organizations.

The Diamond Jubilee Medal is awarded by the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II in commemoration of the 60^th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the throne.
