Marisolle Negash of Elmwood High School receives the ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence from Director, Daisydee Bautista |
I can’t believe another year has already passed by! Now three years young, ANAK calls another long year to a close. We continue to learn and grow as we continue to serve our community. Here’s just a snapshot of this past year.
We were grateful to receive support from the Daniel McIntyre St. Matthews Community Association for ANAK’s Kapatid In-School Mentorship Program and Bahay Kubo Initiative. The after-school program, which bridges friendships between newcomers and Canadian-born Filipino youth, expanded from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute (DMCI) to also include General Wolfe Junior High and Wellington Elementary Schools. In December, a fun time was had by all as many mentors and kapatids enjoyed their winter firsts, skating and tobogganing at the Winter Park at the Forks. The program wrapped-up for this school year with an unexpectedly cool but exhilarating day at Fun Mountain Water Slide Park! In July, ANAK invited 11 Filipino-Canadian students from grades 4 to 12 to take part in the Faculty of Medicine UM Biomedical Summer Camp for inner-city children.
We at ANAK are also proud to celebrate and honour the achievements of our young leaders. ANAK’s annual Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence was awarded for its third year in a row to recent high school graduates Marisolle Negash (Elmwood High School) and Janine Urbano (Sisler High School). Both took part in a city-wide competition that included both an extensive essay and interview. Their essays will be featured in the upcoming issues of Pilipino Express. Anthony Ngayan (DMCI) was also awarded the ANAK Liwayway Citizenship Book Award for his commitment both as a volunteer in our mentorship programs and for his academic studies. Congratulations!
Amidst the 50th anniversary celebrations hosted by the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM) throughout the year, ANAK was honoured to also take part in the festivities as host of the annual Liwayway Philippine Heritage High School Conference and Gala last May. This year’s theme, Pamunuan highlighted the leadership role of our youth and featured various workshops and lectures.
I would like to also take this opportunity to give huge thanks to our volunteers and supporters! In addition to the whirlwind of events over this past year, we were lucky enough to also build partnerships and projects yet to come. There’s only more to look forward to from your ANAK! Keep connected with us in Pilipino Express to learn how you can take part in our upcoming Philippine Studies Summer Institute at the University of Winnipeg, Philippine heritage Oral History Project and Exhibit at The Manitoba Museum as well as our ongoing mentorship programs. We hope to see you soon!
Daisydee Bautista is the current Director of ANAK. All are invited to attend ANAK’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday, August 16, 2009 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at SEED Winnipeg Inc. 80 Salter Street.
