Pilipino Express is delighted to welcome Michael Moya as one of our newest regular contributors. Beginning with this issue, readers can look forward to enjoying his original comic strip, Pilandok the Trickster, a fresh and entertaining take on a beloved Filipino folktale.
Michael is a Filipino-Canadian self-taught artist, illustrator, and aspiring komik creator. Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, he now calls Pinawa, Manitoba home. Although he grew up in Canada, Michael has developed a deep appreciation for Filipino culture, folklore, and mythology. Through books, research, and a lifelong passion for learning, he continues to explore his roots while honing his artistic skills and storytelling.
His dream is simple yet inspiring: to introduce Filipino culture to a wider audience through art and comics. That passion comes to life in Pilandok the Trickster, a comic inspired by the clever folk hero Pilandok, the legendary mouse-deer known for using wit and humour to outsmart those around him. Michael found an unexpected connection between his surroundings in Manitoba, where white-tailed deer are a familiar sight, and the rich folklore of the Philippines. That connection sparked the idea for this unique comic, blending his Canadian home with his Filipino heritage.
At Pilipino Express, we are always proud to showcase the talents of Filipino Canadians, especially those who are helping preserve and share our culture in creative ways. We believe Michael’s work will entertain readers of all ages while introducing, or reintroducing, the timeless charm of Filipino folklore to a new generation.
Please join us in welcoming Michael Moya to the Pilipino Express family. We hope you’ll enjoy following the adventures of Pilandok the Trickster in every issue.
