New Awit vocal group brings Filipino musical heritage to Manitoba

A new voice has arrived on Winnipeg’s concert stages. The Winnipeg Awit Vocal Ensemble (WAVE) was officially launched last month, bringing together nine local artists to celebrate the rich musical traditions of the Philippines through performances that bridge cultural heritage with contemporary artistry.

“What will set WAVE apart is the remarkable talent behind every performance,” says board chairperson Sheila Anne Tan. “Beyond choral singing, its members are trained vocalists, music educators, solo performers, conductors, instrumentalists, and lifelong musicians who bring years of experience from the Philippines and Canada. Together, they represent a rare blend of technical excellence and heartfelt storytelling, delivering performances that resonate long after the final note,” she adds.

While the ensemble’s foundation lies in the infectious rhythms and melodies of Philippine pop, WAVE is building a repertoire that will span multiple genres, offering audiences a diverse listening experience. At its core, the group is dedicated to fostering community connection and showcasing the musicality of Manitoba’s Filipino diaspora.

The collective’s mission is fourfold: to foster, support, and advance the choral arts, to create educational and performance pathways for singers, conductors, and musicians, to deepen public appreciation for Philippine music, and to actively partner with local arts organizations, schools, and community groups.

The founding lineup features Jesse Alcasabas, Vina Dimayuga, Ariel Fernando, Jean Lopez, Jim Lopez, Oscar Pantaleon, Shawn Porteous, Lorenz Sarrondo, and Jaymar Tria. Guiding the ensemble’s operations is a board of directors comprising chairperson Sheila Anne Tan, vice-chairperson Arlene Canseco, secretary Joyce Angeles, treasurer Aileen Ochoa, and auditor Miles Hie.

The ensemble is hitting the ground running this season. In August, members will perform at the ANCOP Walk and the MFSF Winnipeg Filipino Fiesta. Looking ahead to November, they are scheduled to appear at Oberih Voices in Harmony and the Manitoba Choral Association’s 50th Anniversary Gala Concert. They have also been invited by the UP Alumni Association in America to participate in a virtual Christmas fundraising event.
